Google searches for Briton increased in 2021

When Emma Raducanu burst onto the tennis scene at Wimbledon last year and then won the US Open a few months later, her popularity skyrocketed and people became obsessed with her every move – which has now been officially proven.

It has been revealed that the British No.1’s name generated eight million Google searches in the UK last year, up from just 250 searches in May 2021, according to research by Futures Sport in association with the Women’s Sport Trust.

There’s no doubt that the teenage sensation’s meteoric rise to success, rising from No. 343 at the start of the year to end as world No. 19, fueled this massive leap.

Her name made headlines in June last year when she managed to reach the knockout stages at Wimbledon despite being unseeded, but that’s when she decided to retire during the draw after suffering from her breathing which really started the conversation around her. as some, including former player John McEnroe, speculated she could not handle the pressure.

Raducanu later denied those claims after her performances at Flushing Meadows where she became the 2021 US Open champion following a 10-match winning streak from qualifying to the final.

The 19-year-old also enjoyed a meteoric rise away from the courtroom, just days after winning in New York she was invited to attend the star-studded Met Gala and has since signed advertising deals with the likes of Dior, Tiffany & Co, British Airways and Evian, as well as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Although her recent form hasn’t been great after she pulled out of the Australian Open in the second round, the Bromley local has had an impact on women’s sport as a whole, as women’s sport has drew nearly 33 million viewers last year and his US Open victory was watched by a peak of 9.2 million on Channel 4 free-to-air.

Even though she didn’t go as far in the season-opening Grand Slam as she did in the United States, there’s still plenty to come from Raducanu, so watch this space.

The world number 13 is next in action at the Abierto Akron Zapopan in Guadalajara, Mexico which kicks off on February 21.
